East Los Angeles, CA – April 19, 2025
In a stunning debut season, the Skyline College Women's Wrestling Team made history by earning 3rd place at the 2025 3C2A Women's State Wrestling Championships, competing against 16 of California's top collegiate programs. Composed primarily of freshmen from San Mateo County, the first-year Trojans turned heads with seven top-10 finishers, including three All-Americans (top 3 in state), solidifying their status as a rising force in women's wrestling.
Championship Highlights
• 103 lbs: Graciela Caro captured Skyline's first-ever individual state title, dismantling top-seeded Celia Esquivel (Bakersfield College) via an 11-0 technical fall in just 3:24. "All the hard work paid off. I trusted my training, my coaches, and my team. Beating the top seed just shows what Skyline wrestling is all about," said Caro.
• 110 lbs: Alexandra Flood (dropping from 117) wrestled to a strong 7th-place finish.
• 138 lbs: Arianna McPike upset the #3 seed and claimed a well-earned 3rd place podium finish.
• 160 lbs: Annette Beltran and Jamie Micallef, both Trojans, squared off in the 3rd place match, with Beltran edging a dramatic 7-7 win on criteria.
• Additional placers included: Shannon Cleary (8th at 145 lbs) and Alia Vunipola (6th at 207 lbs).
Head Coach Olga Camacho and Assistant Sirena Konishi pointed to the team's early-season competition as key to their success:
"Wrestling Southern California's best at the ELAC tournament gave us a blueprint. We knew the competition would be fierce, but our athletes adjusted and fought with everything they had."
On medaling as a first-year program."To podium with a roster full of first-year wrestlers is beyond anything we imagined. These women rewrote expectations—and this is just the beginning."
Skyline's breakout performance signals a shift in Northern California women's wrestling. With a foundation of hungry young talent, elite coaching, and a culture built for championship success, the Trojans are poised for an even stronger showing in 2026.
