Martin caps Skyline career with state championship at 184lbs.

Sophomore Stephen Martin (Palo Alto, Gunn HS) wrapped up a historic season at the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships by becoming the first Skyline College wrestler to earn a state title since 2000. Martin defeated Jacob Annis (Bakersfield) 7-0 to become just the 5th Trojan in the programs history to bring home a championship. Martin's amazing 2019 season included a Coast Conference Championship and a Nor-Cal Championship to go along with the CCCAA State Title at 184lbs.

Head Coach James Haddon had this to say about Martins remarkable 2019 performance.

"I am very excited and incredibly proud of Stephen for his accomplishments on and off the mat in working towards his goal of being a state champion. He was able to overcome so many obstacles and setbacks in winning the state finals this weekend.  His physical strength is like nothing I have ever seen; however, it truly was his mental toughness that paved the way to winning state. He did not give up a single offensive point in the state tournament through his dominate performance--this is generally unheard of. A whole host of people helped Stephen this season not limited to the Skyline's dedicated Athletic Department including the training staff, coaches, and his hardworking teammates."

Martin is also the first Skyline state champion who is also a local product. He is a graduate from Gunn High School in Palo Alto where he was second place finisher at CCS his senior year.

The last three state champions before Martin for Skyline were:

*Joey Martinez of Turlock High School, won two state titles for Skyline in 1998 and 2000

*Gabe Zagata of W.C. Wood High School Vacaville, CA, and was a State Champion in 1995

*Darryl Terukina of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Campbell High School was a State Champion in 1985
